The Holy Spirit Helps Us Remember
Hello, friends!
John 14:26-27 (ESV)
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Dear friends, I don’t know about you, but I sure need these verses. I need to memorize them (again) so the Holy Spirit can better help me by calling them to my mind whenever I need these words the most.
The Holy Spirit’s role as our God-given counselor encourages us to stay on the “Jesus Path”, to keep walking by faith and not by sight, so we stand firm in Christ, the wisdom and power of God, and win spiritual battles (Ephesians 6:10-20) to the end of our days.
The Holy Spirit is our counselor.
What’s a counselor?
What comes to my mind are two roles that have encouraged me in my life. The individuals in both of these roles had dedicated themselves to years of training.
One role is the school counselor. This counselor gave me advice (and choices) on what classes to take in high school and then in college. School counselors asked us students questions to learn about our interests and our skills. These counselors then worked to match us with potential occupations, future careers.
The other role is the family therapist or counselor. Again, these counselors dedicate years of education and training in human psychology to learn about human behaviors. They apply this wisdom to situations in which behaviors became harmful. Christian counselors add even more years of education and training to learn how to apply God’s word in situations where human behavior became toxic, and harms the people who value His word and seek the healing only the Lord can give.
The Holy Spirit is the “ultimate” counselor.
He is the third person of the Trinity. He’s our holy gift sent from the Father, in answer to Jesus’ request, to live in us. God’s indwelling Spirit is our wonderful counselor.
Just imagine the wisdom He has for us!
For you!
We can ask Him for wisdom anytime we need it. For me, I ask Him for wisdom every day because I can make, and have made, poor choices. (And, the consequences of those choices are painful at times.)
James 1:5 (ESV)
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
Again, in a paraphrase:
James 1:5 (The Voice)
If you don’t have all the wisdom needed for this journey, then all you have to do is ask God for it; and God will grant all that you need. He gives lavishly and never scolds you for asking.
Remember the first verses quoted at the beginning of this post? I love how they read in the Amplified version.
John 14:26-27 (The Amplified Version, Classic)
26 But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.27 Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]
Your Turn
Are you asking the Holy Spirit for godly wisdom?
Better yet, do you sit still, in quiet moments, so you can listen for His wisdom? He’s eager and willing to give you the wisdom you need.
Dear friends, I hope you’ll give sitting still in quiet moments a try.
Listen.
He gives generously!

Soli Deo Gloria!
Note: If you’ve been asking God for wisdom through His Holy Spirit, and feel He isn’t answering your prayers, I understand, I “get it”.
Pray about making an appointment with a Christian counselor to help you talk through your situation with another human who has the indwelling Holy Spirit. I’ve found that very helpful in past situations.
