Holy Spirit 2023 Series:
He Is Present | He Helps Us | He Is Our Wisdom | He Is Our Comforter | He Is Our Counselor | He Is Our Helper | He Is Our Intercessor | He Is Our Advocate
It’s in His Job Description
One day this past week, my husband and I were discussing a project of his, details I’ll keep under wraps for now. As we talked, he mentioned roadblocks that kept getting in his way. Suddenly, I saw a change in his face, in his expression, what people used to call his “countenance”. The change disturbed me.
As I stood at the sink listening to him, I began to pray and ask the Holy Spirit what was going on. His quiet response was that a “spiritual nuisance” from the enemy’s camp was affecting my husband. I mentioned this to him, and immediately his expression changed back to normal. We prayed together. He started thinking of ideas to help him get over the obstacles in the way of his project. He went from feeling discouraged to being a “man of action”, filled with ideas on how to move forward.
Throughout that day, I kept thinking about why the enemy would care about my husband’s project and try to thwart it. That night, after dinner, I continued chatting with the Holy Spirit, who quietly let me know the enemy didn’t want my husband to succeed. When I shared this with my husband, he agreed. We acknowledged what was going on, the enemy’s role in creating roadblocks, and we prayed for the Lord to be Lord of the project.
Over the next few days, doors opened for my husband. Instead of facing a struggle, things came to him easily and with much peace. He received, for free (!!), a crucial piece of equipment he needed to complete some key tasks.
It’s been amazing.
This past week, we have watched as the Lord “did His thing” with my husband’s project in ways we haven’t experienced in many years.
Lesson learned?
The Holy Spirit helps us when we ask and when we listen. It’s a part of His “job description”.
Romans 8:26 (NLT)
26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
And in our specific case, when we were stuck and wondering what was going on, and we prayed, the Lord helped us to notice that a spiritual battle was causing the roadblocks. Once we acknowledged that and sought His Lordship over the project, doors opened and new pathways appeared.
John 16:13 (ESV)
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
I often think that verses like John 16:13 refer only to the truth about Jesus Christ, God’s covenant with His people, and sharing the good news with others. Could it be that this verse might also refer to all truth in our daily living? Yes, I believe so.
Let’s go back to Romans 8: “And the Holy Spirit helps us….”
It’s in His job description. Expect Him to help you.
Your Turn
Whatever is going on in your life, know that the Holy Spirit is in every Christ follower, and He longs to help you. Even if you’ve prayed many times for your situation, keep praying. But, most importantly, listen. Listen for the Holy Spirit’s voice because He wants to help you.
Then do as He says.
John 14:26-27 (NLT)
26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
27 I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
Soli Deo Gloria!
