Lies from the Enemy
“I am alone and no one cares about me.”
Let’s be honest: many of us (and I include me) have felt this way.
Often.
Too many times.
When we’re physically fatigued and worn out by challenging circumstances, when we’re deprived of food and our blood sugar crashes, when we experience harm at the hands of others, we feel alone.
Does God care? If yes, where is He?
And thus the enemy sneaks in his lies to fulfill his goal: to turn us away from God, to separate us forever from the only One who truly cares. The One who went to great lengths to show us we’re not alone, to show us how much He cares.
What God Says about You
“God cares about me and is with me.”
This phrase is Louie Giglio’s response to the enemy in his book “Don’t Let the Enemy Have a Seat at Your Table” (based on Psalm 23). Louie then follows the phrase with this verse:
1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)
7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
The apostle Peter wrote his letters to the elders of churches in the Roman Empire who experienced devastating persecution for their believing loyalty in Jesus Christ. What we call chapter 5 includes Peter’s parting instructions to the elders. He encouraged them in their role as shepherds over the Lord’s flock, to eagerly and humbly care for them in their suffering.
With confidence, Peter encouraged the believers to be bold in casting, in flinging, their anxieties, their cares on God, the chief shepherd.
And, Peter wrote these words with great confidence and assurance because he lived daily with the Son of God for His approximately three years of ministry. And then Peter saw the risen Christ. Peter knew without a doubt that God cared.
While writing his letters, Peter probably recalled the Lord’s words in the Psalms:
Psalm 55:22 (NIV)
22 Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
The apostle Paul, Peter’s brother in the faith, also was an eyewitness of the Son of God and knew His character. Paul was also a former and merciless persecutor of the Lord’s faithful ones. A sinner saved by grace through his faith, just like his brother Peter, Paul wrote with great confidence these words:
Phil. 4:6 (Amplified Bible)
6 Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.
Both Peter and Paul knew God’s character not only from what they had been taught in the Hebrew scriptures, but from knowing the Son of God personally.
Does God care? Yes, He does. We often need to wait on God’s timing, but He loves us and cares deeply for us, His redeemed ones.
Where is God? If you’re one of His redeemed ones, if you believe in Jesus as the Christ and are loyal only to Him for salvation, then God is in you through the Holy Spirit. He never leaves you nor forsakes you.
God’s word is crystal clear in many places in both the Old Testament and the New Covenant that He cares about us right now, and He’ll deliver us from our troubles in the future.
So, our enemy’s lies once again have no basis in truth. His lies are beaten down by what God says about Himself and about us.
God cares about you, and with Him in your life through His Holy Spirit you’re never alone. Go ahead and pour your heart out to God today, tomorrow, and whenever you need to cast your anxiety on Him. He’s always available to listen, to love on you, and comfort you.
And, one day He will take you to your true home where life’s anxieties and the enemy’s lies will be forgotten.
Forever.
Your Take Away
Dear Friend, if you haven’t already, begin today to prepare yourself for hard times to come. I see hard times increasing and feel that even more difficulties will eventually come to all believers. Get as close to the Lord as you can. He knows you aren’t perfect, and He’ll welcome any time you spend with Him casting your anxieties on Him. Your Father adores you, so come to Him just as you are.
Take time this week to read Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25-34.
Then, ask yourself:
What lies from the enemy have you believed about you being alone, that no one cares about you?
Which verses in God’s word can you use to fight back against this lie? (Take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.)
When are you going to ignore the enemy? (Why not start today!)
If you struggle with believing the truth of God’s amazing love for you, please find a safe and loving person who follows Jesus. Talk with that person about your hesitation, your doubts.
Dear friend, it’s time we all take back what the enemy has stolen through his lies. God’s word, and our relationship with Him, are our keys to victory.
Soli Deo Gloria!
